WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Gallup’s latest poll, conducted for the first time since 1994, found that some 54 percent of US citizens say they are opposed to nuclear energy compared to 44 percent who support it.

The poll also found that US Republicans are more likely than Democrats and Independents to favor the use of nuclear energy. Fifty-three percent of Republicans say they are in favor of using nuclear energy, while only 34 percent of Democrats support its use.

The less favorable views on nuclear energy could be attributed to the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, the poll explained.

The survey also noted that lower gas prices over the past year could also be driving a higher opposition to nuclear energy as Americans are less worried about the US energy situation.
