Senator Marco Rubio, the favorite of the traditional Republican Party establishment, has announced he is suspending his US presidential campaign after being beaten by frontrunner Donald Trump in the Florida primary election.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Rubio consistently failed to finish in the top three in large population US states though he won the caucuses in the sparsely populated state of Minnesota.

“It is not God’s will that I become president [in the current campaign],” Rubio told his supporters in Florida on Tuesday night.

With 45.39 percent of the votes counted in his home state of Florida, Rubio trialed Trump by 27.62 percent to 45.39 percent.
