US Anti-Daesh Coalition Envoy Arrives in Iraq to Meet With Senior Officials

US President Barack Obama’s special envoy for the anti-Daesh (Islamic state) coalition has arrived in Iraq to hold meetings with the state government and security officials, the State Department announced.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – Special Presidential Envoy landed in Baghdad on Wednesday to meet with senior Iraqi government and security officials, the State Department said in a press release.

"Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL [Islamic State] Brett McGurk arrived in Baghdad, Iraq, today to meet with senior Iraqi government and security officials and representatives from the US-led coalition," the release stated.

The release added that on March 6, McGurk will join Vice President Joe Biden in Abu Dhabi for discussions with senior United Arab Emirates leaders on how to intensify efforts to destroy the Islamic State, which is also known as Daesh.

On Wednesday, Biden told Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi during a telephone conversation that Washington was determined to cooperate with G7 countries and other allies to ensure Iraq has enough funds to counter the terror group.

The Islamic State has been designated as a terrorist group and is outlawed in the United States, Russia and other countries. The US-led coalition has been conducting airstrikes against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq since 2014.
