More Democrats than ever support Hillary Clinton as their party’s candidate for the US presidency following her victory in a major primary contest last weekend, a Rasmussen Reports revealed on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Some 53 percent of likely Democratic voters said they could vote for Clinton compared with 31 percent for her opponent, Senator Bernie Sanders, the poll showed.

"This latest survey is the first time Clinton has risen above the 50 percent mark since the Democratic debates began in October," a press release accompanying the poll stated. "The survey also suggests that Sanders’ support has peaked and that Clinton is winning over voters who were previously undecided."

The polls’ release came as voters in 12 US states cast ballots today in the so-called Super Tuesday primary, where Clinton is expected to top Sanders by a wide margin, according to multiple surveys.

If predictions of a Clinton win prove accurate, the former first lady could emerge with an almost insurmountable lead in delegates during the Democratic National Convention in July.

The convention will crown the Democratic candidate in the 2012 presidential race, which begins in earnest in the fall.
