Republican presidential candidates, businessman and controversial figure Donald Trump has won the South Carolina primary, according to the media.

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump has won Saturday's primary in South Carolina, as reported by US media.

Considered a long-shot only a few months ago, the wealthy New York real estate tycoon has gone beyond expectations and may now have a real shot at the Republican nomination, pundits are saying. He has been roundly criticized for a number of controversial statements including the suggestion that he would build a wall between the US and Mexico border and he would stop any Muslims from entering the country.

Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio appear to be in a close battle for second place.
