The United States added Aruba and Bonaire to the travel warning list of countries amid the spread of the Zika virus, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced in a statement.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In a matter of months the CDC’s has added more than two dozen countries throughout the Americas, Caribbean and the Pacific to its list, specifically cautioning pregnant woman to avoid visiting affected areas.

"CDC is working with other public health officials to monitor for ongoing Zika virus‎ transmission," the statement said on Thursday. "Today, CDC added the following destinations to the Zika virus travel notices: Aruba and Bonaire."

The Zika virus has been linked to baby births with abnormally small heads and limited brain development.

Earlier in February, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Zika virus a public health emergency.

At present, at least 15 major drug companies are competing to develop a vaccine for the Zika virus, but the CDC has said large vaccine trials would likely not begin for another 18 months.
