Donald Trump, who promised to lead a US winning streak so prolific that Americans would grow tired of winning, suffered a loss at the Iowa caucuses – and the Internet has reveled in throwing it in his face.

Trump, who often describes rivals as "losers," finished second behind Ted Cruz Monday night in Iowa's Republican caucuses. Cruz won 28% of the vote, while Trump's 24% narrowly beat Marco Rubio by one point.

Trump called his performance in Iowa a "great finish," claiming he spent very little money there because he was a "long-shot." He accused the media of not covering his performance fairly, and boasted that he garnered the second-most votes in the history of Iowa caucuses, behind Cruz.

But Trump's second-place finish is doomed to be forgotten, as no one remembers who came in second – at least that’s what Trump tweeted, quoting champion golfer Walter Hagen, in December 2013 and again in June 2014.

After Trump's loss, the Internet quickly unearthed the tweets, which together have been retweeted approximately 57,000 times.

The website Loser.com is brilliantly trolling Trump by redirecting to his Wikipedia page.

After the loss, Trump's Twitter handle, his favorite medium to call out "losers," went silent for an unprecedented amount of time. But that didn't stop the rest of the Internet from rubbing the loss in his face.

Trump returned to Twitter on Tuesday to criticize the candidate who defeated him the night before, saying Cruz's "far too long, rambling, overly flamboyant" victory speech was his "Howard Dean moment."
