US democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders said Tuesday that the results in the Iowa caucuses showed that he was in a "virtual tie" with his rival Hillary Clinton.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) Clinton led with 49.8 percent to Sanders’ 49.6 percent, with 99 percent of precincts reporting early Tuesday morning.

"Tonight, while the results are still not known, it looks like we are in a virtual tie," Sanders said during a campaign rally in Iowa.

The presidential hopeful added that according to the results, he and his supporters were likely to get about a half of the delegates from Iowa.

The Iowa caucuses marked the start of the 2016 US presidential nomination process.
