Senior US officials have confirmed the exchange of four Iranian-Americans, including Washington Post journalist Jason Rezaian, for seven Iranians held on sanctions charges, CNN broadcaster reported Saturday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – According to the officials, the deal comes after a year of negotiations kept in secret, the broadcaster added.

Earlier in the day, a Tehran court said that Iran had freed four Iranian-American prisoners under a deal with the United States.

Under the deal, the four prisoners will be exchanged for seven Iranian nationals serving their sentence at US jails, according to Prosecutor Abbas Jaafari.

Rezaian was detained in July 2014 in Iran’s capital. He was convicted of espionage in closed proceedings and held in Evin Prison in northwestern Tehran.
