WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Department of Defense has not yet produced any strategy to implement Barack Obama's Presidential Directive to achieve "Net Zero" use of fossil fuels by turning to renewable energy sources, a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report said.

"The Department of Defense (DOD) has not established an integrated net zero strategy or policy for achieving net zero," the report, issued on Tuesday, stated.

The GAO explained that the Defense Department has not established an integrated strategy because until recently there had not been any statutory goals regarding Net Zero.

Achieving net zero means producing as much energy from renewable energy sources as is consumed by an installation, limiting the consumption of water in order to not deplete the local watershed, and reusing waste streams to add zero waste to landfills, the GAO explained.

"According to [Defense Department] officials, none of the military departments have established net zero as a funded program," the report continued.

US military service officials told the GAO they believed that fully achieving net zero was unrealistic and ultimately cost prohibitive, the report added.
