Following President Barack Obama's executive orders on gun control, the executive director emeritus of Gun Owners of America (GOA) told Radio Sputnik that not enough Americans are in possession of firearms.

GOA is headquartered in the DC suburb of Springfield, Virginia, and has 300,000 members across the country.

According to its website, the group is "dedicated to promoting their Second Amendment freedom to keep and bear arms" and "lobbies for the pro-gun position in Washington, DC and is involved in firearm issues in the states."

In an interview with Radio Sputnik's "Loud and Clear," GOA's Larry Pratt said Obama, through his executive orders, is trying to "change the law, which clearly states how you determine who a dealer is, and who must comply with that background check law when making a sale, and who is not a dealer."

Pratt said Obama's orders will not be impactful because most gun sales already involve a background check, which he called a violation of the Second Amendment.

Obama Should Focus on Beating Daesh, Stop Violating US Citizens' Gun Rights

"It's not going to affect that many people," he said "but the principle of it is obnoxious because we don't think the background check has been a good idea, Constitutionally, from the beginning."

Pratt, who served as GOA's executive director for 30-some years before being named executive director emeritus on January 1, called for the elimination of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

In addition to the ATF, Pratt opposes the executive order calling for law enforcement, first responders and school officials to be trained for active-shooter situations, saying it does not address the "main problem" in school shootings, which he believes is gun-free zones.

"It's not really getting at the main part of the problem, which is we insist on putting children and teachers in places where they're going to be defenseless," Pratt said.

He called for the arming of "teachers, principals [and] janitors."

"Anybody that can legally carry a firearm now should be able to legally carry a gun in what is presently a gun-free-zone, where all these massacres have occurred," he said.

In a release published on its website Tuesday, GOA said Obama's executive order was a continuation of the president's "assault on the Second Amendment," adding that the group "will be doing everything in its power to fight these edicts tooth-and-nail."
