Protest Set in New York After Officers Not Indicted in Tamir Rice Case

Advocacy group Peoples Power Assemblies said that a protest has been scheduled to take place in New York City later tonight following a grand jury decision not to charge two Cleveland, Ohio police officers in the death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) — A protest has been scheduled to take place in New York City later tonight following a grand jury decision not to charge two Cleveland, Ohio police officers in the death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, advocacy group Peoples Power Assemblies said via Twitter.

"Due to [the] non-indictment for Tamir Rice’s murderers we will meet tonight at 6 p.m. to shut it down for Tamir Rice," Peoples Power Assemblies tweeted on Monday.

Earlier on Monday, a grand jury decided not to indict Cleveland Police officers Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmback on murder charges after they shot and killed Rice on November 22, 2014. Prior to being killed, Rice was playing in a park with a toy gun.

Prosecutors argued that the officers’ actions were not criminal, since there was no way for them to tell if the gun was not real, and a grand jury sided with prosecutors.

Rice’s supporters believe that Rice’s death could have been prevented, and accuse the Cleveland Police Department of purposely not releasing all photos and video leading up to his death, as well as refusing to immediately administer first aid that could have saved Rice’s life.
