MOSCOW (Sputnik) Over 3,000 criminals in the US state of Washington have been released by accident since 2002. The US officials are currently searching for 27 missing convicts after the Corrections Department discovered the computer mistake.

"We're casting a wide net and doing extensive reviews of each case. How that did not rise up in the agency to the highest levels is not clear to me. We're going to fix it, and it will never happen again," Pacholke said Thursday during a press conference, as quoted by the Fox News channel.

Pacholke added that the Corrections Department should be held accountable for not fixing the coding glitch immediately after becoming aware of it in 2012.

According to the department head, criminals were released an average of 55 days before their actual release date.
