Officer Arthur Baldwin, 30, died Tuesday after being shot several times, according to the Secret Service and District of Columbia police.
According to police, he was shot shortly before 3 PM Tuesday while in a residential neighborhood. Police said they are looking for three people in connection with the shooting.
Baldwin may have been the victim of a robbery or a robbery attempt, said Cmdr. Robert Alder of the police department's homicide branch.
Baldwin worked in the Secret Service's Foreign Missions Branch. He was placed on leave and had his security clearance suspended in April after he was arrested on a felony charge of first-degree attempted burglary and destruction of property. According to a police report, Baldwin was armed with his service weapon when he tried to break into his girlfriend's house.
"We express our condolences to the family of our fallen employee," the Secret Service said in a statement.
Baldwin's trial was scheduled for February, and he was in court Tuesday morning, a few hours before he was shot.
