WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — President Barack Obama has called for the United States to resettle 10,000 Syrian refugees in 2016 in an attempt to help deal with the more than four million Syrian refugees worldwide. Obama’s proposal has caused widespread criticism by lawmakers and US state governors, who argue against letting the refugees for security reasons.
“The arrival of the Syrian refugee family in Texas shows that the refugee resettlement program, which has saved millions of lives since it began in 1980, won't be undone by a few statements hastily made by governors in a moment of panic,” Nezer said.
On Monday, the first Syrian refugee family arrived in Texas despite a lawsuit by the Texas Health and Human Services, which sought to block Syrian refugees from resettling in the state.
“The US refugee program is a community based effort that for decades has involved thousands of churches, synagogues, local governments, schools and volunteers, and is something that Americans are proud of,” Nezer asserted. “I'm hopeful that governors have begun to understand this.”
