A grand jury indicted the six officers in May after Freddie Gray, 25, died in April from spinal cord injuries he sustained after he was loaded into the police van.

The officers reportedly ignored Gray’s requests for medical help. They now face charges on counts of assault, manslaughter, false imprisonment and misconduct in office.

Protests against police brutality and riots erupted in Baltimore after Gray’s death. Authorities responded by declaring a curfew in the city and deployed the Maryland National Guard. More than 250 people were arrested.
