"This was a very tough afternoon," Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers told reporters.

Earlier, Colorado Springs Police Lt. Catherine Buckley told reporters that 11 people had been transported to local hospitals following the Friday shooting.

On Friday, a gunman barricaded himself in the abortion provider Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs after shooting several people.

After a successful siege, police arrested the gunman.

"The perpetrator is in custody. The situation has been resolved. There's no continuing peril to the citizens of Colorado Springs," Suthers said after the operation, which lasted about five hours.

Planned Parenthood is a national US healthcare provider that operates hundreds of clinics throughout the country. It has come under intense scrutiny after multiple videos surfaced over the past five months revealing the organization’s senior officials and doctors discussing the sale of aborted fetuses’ organs and tissue.
