Americans' feelings about their compatriots are at their least favorable levels in the last decade, according to the Pew Global Attitudes Project.

Only 83% of Americans have a favorable view of Americans, bringing the US in fifth out of 23 countries ranked. The Philippines came in first, with 92 percent expressing a positive view of Americans. Ghana, South Korea, and Kenya followed in spots two through four.

Some two years ago, the US ranked third in the same category, with the Philippines first and Israel second. Israel dropped to 7th place this year, perhaps in response to Washington's role in the Iran nuclear deal that was roundly rebuked by Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Philippines' positive attitude towards Americans may be explained by the US' intrusion into the South China Sea row. Washington has expressed its support for those countries whose territorial claims in the region overlap with those of China.
