Mistreatment of minorities by the Chicago Police Department (CPD) has for the most part not been recorded, former police detective and US advocacy group PoliceAbuse.com Executive Director Diop Kamau told Sputnik on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Monday, a large database of complaints against CPD was revealed, containing more than 55,000 sections of data showing how Chicago polices its communities and oversees its police force. Independent journalist Jamie Kalven and University of Chicago Law Professor Craig Futterman created the database.

"The one thing that is really missing in the equation to solve police misconduct is the relevance of data," Kamau said. "No one is keeping track of these incidents in a very comprehensive way."

Kamau argued the CPD files could hardly tell the whole story and the breadth of the problem.

"We just had a very serious problem in terms of the police and how they operate in minority communities but’s invisible to the rest of the world and most of our own country."

Kamau concluded that additional available resources need to be utilized to uncover hidden policing practices in minority communities and communities of color and the poor.
