Over 50 percent of US citizens answering a questionnaire believe that the country should tighten its gun control laws, a distinct increase since last year’s number, a pollster revealed Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to a poll by Gallup, 55 percent want stricter gun laws, an 8-percent rise since last year’s poll.

Fewer people want the laws to be less strict, and the number of people who want gun regulations to be kept as they are has also decreased.

The intentionally vaguely worded Second Amendment to the US Constitution guarantees the right of US citizens to keep and bear arms. Gun violence and tougher gun controls are in the spotlight of political debate in the country.

The new poll comes out days after a 6-year-old shot dead his 3-year-old brother in Chicago. The child's father was arrested and charged with child endangerment causing death, the police said Sunday.

Over the past year, the United States has seen a growing number of mass shooting incidents, including three school shootings in October. In other cases, shooters have opened fire in churches, movie theaters, and military facilities.

Following a fatal shooting in Roseburg, Oregon in early October, US President Barack Obama called on Congress to change the country’s gun laws, and urged Americans to pay more attention to presidential candidates’ positions on gun control.
