Billionaire businessman Donald Trump holds commanding leads over retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson in the key contest states of South Carolina and Nevada in the Republican presidential race, new CNN/ORC polls revealed.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The CNN/ORC polls were conducted by telephone October, 3-10. A total of 1,009 South Carolina adults were interviewed and in Nevada, interviews were conducted with 1,011 adults.

"Trump holds 38 percent support in Nevada, with Carson in second with 22 percent and in South Carolina, Trump doubles Carson's support, 36 percent to 18 percent," CNN commented on the results of the polls, which was released on Wednesday.

No other Republican Party presidential candidate came close to challenging either man in the two states, which will be the third and fourth to hold selection contests after the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary in February.

The polls confounded claims by prominent US political pundits, especially those with ties to the Republican Party establishment, who had claimed in recent weeks that Trump’s support was fading.

In Nevada, former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina came third with 8 percent, trailed closely by Florida Senator Marco Rubio with 7 percent and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush in fifth place with 6 percent, the CNN/ORC poll results showed.

In South Carolina, Rubio edged out Fiorina for third place but with only 9 percent, she got 7 percent and Bush again in fifth place had 6 percent.
