The United States considers industrial espionage an act of aggression that must be halted, President Barack Obama said at a quarterly meeting of CEOs of top US companies on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Friday, US National Intelligence Director James Clapper said Chinese cyberattacks target a wide range of US data, including economic and national security information.

"Industrial espionage and stealing trade secrets, stealing proprietary information form companies… that we consider an act of aggression that has to stop," Obama said at the Business Roundtable.

The president made the statement in commenting on discussions he would have with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his upcoming visit to Washington, DC.

"We are preparing a number of measures that will indicate to the Chinese that this is not just a matter of us being mildly upset, but is something that will put significant strains on the bilateral relationship if not resolved," Obama stated.

In recent months, Washington has also blamed Beijing for launching a massive cyberattack against the US Office of Personnel Management, which compromised the personal data of more than 21 million current and former US government employees.
