Republican 2016 presidential candidate Ben Carson has gained significant support among potential voters and now is competing for the front-runner status with billionaire Donald Trump, a new CBS News/New York Times poll revealed on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — At present, neurosurgeon Carson enjoys 23 percent of votes, compared to 6 percent he had in August, the poll showed. Current Republican favorite Trump is just a few steps ahead, with 27 percent of votes. The tycoon’s favorability has risen 3 percent since August.

Clinton Support Falls by 21% as Trump Strengthens Position
Three other most popular Republican candidates are significantly behind the top runners. Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush has lost 7 percent of votes since August and now his popularity stands at only 6 percent, according to the poll.

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and Florida Senator Marco Rubio both enjoy 6 percent of votes.

Real estate mogul Trump is currently polling as the overall front-runner for the Republican Party despite controversial comments about women and undocumented migrants.
