The suspected gunman in the fatal shooting in Cleveland, the southeast US state of Mississippi died from apparent self-inflicted wounds, authorities told local media.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Shannon Lamb, who has been wanted by authorities in connection with the killing of a Delta State University (DSU) professor, shot himself after being cornered by police, the Jackson Clarion Ledger publication said late Monday.

Lamb reportedly told police who had been in contact with him that he "will not go to jail."

The alleged shooter’s victim is Ethan Schmidt, assistant professor of American history at DSU. The man has also being sought in connection to the early Monday death of Amy Prentiss in the southern Mississippi town of Gautier, identified by Lamb on his social media as his girlfriend.

William LaForge, DSU president, lifted the campus lockdown in a message posted on his Twitter account following the news.

Speaking to reporters later, Cleveland Police Department Chief Charles Bingham said he was not ready to discuss the motive behind the deadly shooting.
