US State Department announced that the United States could admit more refugees in 2016 than it originally planned.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States could admit more refugees in 2016 than it originally planned, US State Department spokesperson John Kirby said in a press briefing on Wednesday.

"We are continuing to look at options and it is possible that the numbers will increase over next year, but I just don’t have a number to give," Kirby said in addressing a question about the US readiness to accept more refugees fleeing from war-torn Syria.

Facing Up to Crime: ‘Europe Should Send Refugees to US Embassies’
In August, the State Department said the United States plans to admit up to 8,000 Syrian refuges in fiscal year 2016 that lasts from October to September.

Kirby said Secretary of State John Kerry has established a working group to address the refugee crisis in Europe.

"We are exploring options to try to get our hands around this crisis more and more effectively," he noted.

Kirby also stated that settlement is only one option in dealing with the refugee crisis, but it often "is not always the best option" as many migrants prefer to return home.
