Russian National Hockey League (NHL) Los Angeles Kings defenseman Vyacheslav Voynov has been released from jail and taken into custody by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

NHL Hockey Player Slava Voynov Sentenced to Jail for Domestic Violence
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian National Hockey League (NHL) Los Angeles Kings defenseman Vyacheslav Voynov, 25, who was accused of domestic violence in 2014, has been taken into custody by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), The Los Angeles Times reports.

Voynov is currently being held at an "unspecified detention facility" pending a hearing by an immigration judge, the newspaper cited an ICE spokeswoman as saying on Thursday.

ICE took Voynov into custody after the Russian hockey player was released from the Seal Beach Police Detention Center where he had been held since July 7.

Voynov was arrested in Redondo Beach, California in October 2014, following an alleged domestic violence incident involving his wife. Voynov was released on $50,000 bail and was given paid suspension from the NHL.

In December, Voynov pleaded not guilty to domestic violence charges.

Voynov's attorney has said that the October incident was a misunderstanding and any injuries suffered by the woman involved were an accident.

In July, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office said that apart from 3 months in jail, Voynov was getting three years of probation and would have to participate in a 52-week domestic violence prevention program and do eight hours of community service.

Voynov's possible deportation was not brought up at that time, according to his agent Alexander Tyzhnych.
