MOSCOW (Sputnik) – An estimated 64 percent of the US population support building a fence on the border with Mexico in comparison to 28 percent backing a fence with Canada, a poll revealed Friday.

The YouGov survey conducted among 1,000 adults this week showed strong support for a US-Mexican border fence among 42 percent of respondents and moderate support among 22 percent.

Along party lines, self-identified Republicans strongly or moderately backed the fence at 60 percent and 27 percent respectively. In comparison, Democrats showed support for a US-Mexican fence by a combined 44 percent.

When asked if they would support building a fence along the United States’ border with Canada, only 10 percent expressed strong approval and 18 percent somewhat backed the idea.

A combined 55 percent of respondents said they either somewhat or strongly opposed the Canada border fence.

Illegal immigration has emerged as a hot-button issue ahead of the 2016 US presidential elections.

A number of Republican Party candidates, business tycoon Donald Trump most vocal among them, campaign on promising stringent measures to curb illegal immigration. When announcing his presidential candidacy in mid-June, Trump suggested that immigrants from Mexico fueled crime in the United States.
