MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Tennessean newspaper reported that Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Derrick Schofield informed the state Senate on Thursday that he had asked the ACA to conduct the review.
"I was at a conference last week … we talked about what was happening in Tennessee, and other states said the same thing. One of the things they suggested is bring in outside auditors. So we thought about it, talked to our leadership about it, and they thought it was a good idea," Schofield was quoted as saying.
The ACA will review how the state appoints officers, hires new staff and classifies assaults and attacks within prisons. The review will include "about five" of the state’s 13 prisons, according to Schofield.
Recently, a new work schedule was adopted across the Tennessean state prison system amid staffing shortages. Prison employees have complained that the new developments have made their work more dangerous.
