WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – US Vice President Joe Biden appointed a former presidential campaign spokesperson as his a new communications director, the White House announced in a statement amid speculation he will run for office.

“The Vice President announced today that Kate Bedingfield will serve as his Communications Director,” the White House said on Monday.

Beddington previously served as a spokesperson for former Senator John Edwards in his 2008 presidential campaign. She has also held a number of communications positions in the White House and industry.

On Monday, the White House said Biden has all the qualifications and experience to run a successful bid for the presidency.

Several US media reports suggested the appointment indicated Biden was seriously building up an experienced core staff to challenge Democratic Party frontrunner Hillary Clinton for the 2016 presidential nomination.

Biden has indicated he is open to running for the Democratic nomination in 2016, but has not yet declared his candidacy.
