A number of fighter bombers and AWACS reconnaissance planes are taking part in the latest and largest of the summer’s US Pacific Air Forces Red Flag exercises now underway in Alaska.

Overall command is being exercised by the Elmendorf Air Force base, NATO announced on its website Sunday.

No information as to the exact number of the participating military aircraft was available.

This year's training covers joint operations like airborne alert interdiction and midair escort in a war simulation.

"The joint drill is expected to help increase the ability of space management and combat fleet operations through exercises spanning all sectors," the Air Force noted.

The Red Flag exercises are slated to run until August 24.
