NEW YORK (Sputnik) — The wireless car hacking vulnerability that was recently discovered in Fiat Chrysler Automotive (FCA) vehicles spurs concern that the same vulnerability exists in vehicles made by other automakers, US Senator Richard Blumenthal said in a statement on Tuesday.
“We harbor serious concerns that regulators and manufacturers have only exposed the tip of this iceberg,” Blumenthal stated. “Americans do not know yet if FCA’s vehicles are the only models to suffer from the security vulnerabilities recently exposed.”
FCA explained in the statement the recall will update existing software that “insulates connected vehicles from remote manipulation.”
The hacking comes as more vehicles come with electronic technology, which analysts and industry fear could be used to remotely crash cars.
Blumenthal called on the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to take immediate action and investigate whether the hacking vulnerability is present in other vehicles.
“NHTSA must rapidly determine whether other vehicle models are affected by this particular vulnerability, and how remedial actions can be deployed by manufacturers and regulators to secure all vehicles on our roads,” Blumenthal said.
FCA stated they had no other reports of vehicle hackings or injuries due to software breaches.
