US President Barack Obama is saddened by the fact that he has so far failed to strengthen gun-safety laws in the country during his presidency.

MOSCOW, July 24 (Sputnik) — President Obama said in an interview with the BBC:

"The issue of guns, that is an area where if you ask me where has been the one area where I feel that I’ve been most frustrated and most stymied it is the fact that the United States of America is the one advanced nation on Earth in which we do not have sufficient common-sense, gun-safety laws."

Obama acknowledged that the issue had not been resolved to date, but he stressed that he had not abandoned the idea of trying to find a solution to the problem.

"For us not to be able to resolve that issue has been something that is distressing. But it is not something that I intend to stop working on in the remaining 18 months," he told the BBC.

His comments were published on the BBC’s website on Friday, a few hours after a shooting at a Louisiana movie theater that caused at least three deaths and multiple injuries.

The shooting took place during the 7:00 p. m. (23:00 GMT) showing of the Train Wreck comedy at the Grand Theatre in Lafayette, a city with a population of about 140,000 people located about an hour's drive from Baton Rouge, the capital of the US state of Louisiana.

The United States faces serious problems with mass shootings, mostly caused by weak gun safety laws. According to a FBI study, incidents of mass shootings happened nearly once a month in the country, with some 500 people killed and 550 wounded in such attacks during the period from 2000 until 2013.
