US Trade, Travel Bans on Cuba to Continue After Embassies Reopen
18:02 GMT 06.07.2015 (Updated: 10:36 GMT 29.03.2023) The mutual reopening of US-Cuban embassies will not change existing US trade and travel restrictions on the island nation, the White House said on Monday.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States and Cuba plan to officially reestablish diplomatic ties on July 20 by reopening embassies in one another's’ countries.
The decision was announced last Wednesday by President Barack Obama as part of his administration’s ongoing efforts to normalize US-Cuban relations.
Despite the reopening of embassies, US citizens still require a license to lawfully travel to Cuba.
The White House further stated that the Obama Administration “has no plans to alter current migration policy,” which provides guidelines for Cuban immigrants to gain permanent residency in the United States.
