US Marshals Service Director Stacia Hylton stated that the two convicted murderers who escaped from a maximum security prison in Dannemora, New York were added to the list of 15 most wanted fugitives.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) — The two convicted murderers who escaped from a maximum security prison in Dannemora, New York were added to the list of 15 most wanted fugitives, US Marshals Service Director Stacia Hylton said in a statement on Friday.

“The agency’s 15 Most Wanted Fugitive list is reserved for the worst of the worst,” Hylton said. “There is no question [the two escaped convicts] fall into this category.”

On June 6, 2015, New York State Police launched a manhunt for Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, after the authorities at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York discovered the two convicts were missing.

More than 600 law enforcement officers from state, local and federal agencies are assisting in the search for Matt and Sweat, who used power tools to escape through a series of elaborate tunnels.

Matt was serving a sentence of 25 years for kidnapping a man and beating him to death, while Sweat was convicted of first degree murder of a sheriff's deputy and was serving a life sentence without parole.

One of the duties of the US Marshals Service, the oldest US law enforcement agency, is to apprehend federal fugitives.
