US Secretary of State John Kerry has recovered successfully from a broken femur and is working in physical therapy to make a full recovery, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard College Orthopedic Surgery Clinical Instructor Dr. Dennis Burke said in a State Department release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier in June 2015, Kerry underwent a surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston to repair his broken femur following a bicycling accident in Europe.

“Secretary of State John Kerry had an uncomplicated recovery from surgery to repair his broken right femur,” Burke said on Friday. “He is ambulating independently on crutches and working hard with physical therapy toward a full recovery.”

Kerry broke his right hip near the French town of Scionzier on May 31, 2015. He was flown to a hospital in Geneva, Switzerland, before being sent back to the United States to receive further treatment.

Burke said he expects Kerry to fully heal within the coming months.

Kerry has served as Secretary of State since February 1, 2013. Prior to assuming that position, Kerry served as US Senator from the state of Massachusetts from January 1985.
