WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Rubenstein has been serving as the Special Envoy for Syria in the US Department of State’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs since 2014.
He also served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research from 2012 to 2014.

Rubenstein was Consul-General at the US Consulate General in Jerusalem from 2009 to 2012, and prior, was posted in Egypt, Jordan, Brazil, Angola and Tunisia.
President Obama expressed confidence in Rubenstein in helping tackle important challenges facing the United States, according to the release.
