WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Dreamers Amendment has previously passed with bipartisan support in the US House Armed Services Committee.
“Today the House of Representatives voted to strip the “Enable DREAMers to Serve” amendment,” the statement, issued on Thursday, said.
Gallego, who introduced the legislation, said the amendment should not have been controversial, and added that Republicans continue to “wage war” on US immigrant communities.
“[E]xtreme, anti-immigrant Republicans put their extreme politics ahead of the best interest of our military and our country.”
Gallego argued that the United States would benefit from having “dreamers” in the Armed Forces.
The number of new enlistments in US Army dropped from 69,000 to 57,000 between 2013 and 2014, according to the US Army Recruiting Command.
In addition, the US Army exceeded its enlistment goal for 2013 with an extra 154 enlistments to reach 69,154, according to the US Department of Defense.
