MOSCOW (Sputnik) — US federal court charged Christopher Lee Cornell of Green Township, Ohio with attempting to provide "material support and resources" to the Islamic State (ISIL) terrorist organization, US Department of Justice said Thursday.
"Material support and resources consisted of personnel in the form of the defendant himself by plotting and attempting to execute an attack on the U.S. Capitol," the Department of Justice said on its official website.
Cornell, 21, was arrested on January 14, 2015 by the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF).
The current charge is an addition to the original indictment of January 15 that charged Cornell with plotting to attack US Capitol and kill police officers and government employees. Cornell allegedly possessed two semi-automatic rifles and some 600 rounds of ammunition.
The ISIL is a Sunni jihadist group that seized vast territories in Iraq and Syria in 2014. The group actively uses propaganda to lure Westerners into joining its ranks.
