Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee has officially announced on Tuesday that he would seek the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Huckabee was the 44th Governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007, and Chairman of the US National Governor’s Association in 2005-2006. In 2005, Huckabee was named one of Time's top 5 most effective governors of the country.

“It seems perfectly fitting that it would be here that I announce that I am a candidate for president of the United States of America,” Huckabee said during his presidential campaign announcement in his home town Hope, Arkansas.

The former governor will challenge Republican candidates Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina for the presidential nomination.
