WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is willing to publically testify to the US House Select Committee on Benghazi in May 2015 but only once, Clinton’s attorney David Kendall said in a letter to the Committee.

"Secretary Clinton has been and remains ready and willing to testify in public before the Select Committee on Benghazi about the tragic events of September 2012," Kendall’s letter to the House committee read on Monday.

On September 11, 2012, Islamist militants attacked the US diplomatic compound in Benghazi, killing four, including US Ambassador Chris Stevens.’

Following the attack, Clinton took responsibility for the mistakes made in the aftermath of the attack, but rejected accusations that US President Barack Obama’s administration had tried to mislead Americans.

Benghazi Panel Urges Clinton to Testify on 2012 Attacks, Private E-Mail Use
Kendall explained that during the testimony, Clinton "will stay as long as necessary to answer the Committee’s questions," but that she will not "prolong the Committee’s efforts further by appearing on two separate occasions when one will suffice."

Clinton’s willingness to testify to House Members comes after the Committee’s Chairman Trey Gowdy called on Clinton in April 2015 to testify about the attacks as well as her use of private e-mail address during her tenure as Secretary of State.

"Secretary Clinton remains ready to address whatever additional questions this Committee may have, and believes that the Members of the Committee are able to decide how much they will focus on the tragic deaths of four Americans in Benghazi," Kendall added.

US Republican lawmakers claim that the State Department and the White House did not send military back-up to the besieged diplomats in Benghazi to avoid admitting that the attack was mounted by al-Qaida-backed terrorists.

The US President Barack Obama administration had said it decimated the terrorist network with the killing of Osama bin Laden in 2011.

The Select Committee is authorized and directed to conduct a full and complete investigation into the events surrounding the 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi and issue a final report of its findings.
