"It is absolutely vital that the truth comes out on what happened to Freddie Gray," Obama said. “What I think the people of Baltimore want more than anything else is the truth. That's what people around the country expect.”
On Monday, protests turned into riots following the funeral of 25-year-old African American man Freddie Gray, who died of spinal injuries while in police custody.
“All the evidence needs to be presented. Those individuals who are charged obviously are also entitled to due process and rule of law. So I want to make sure that our legal system runs the way it should,” Obama said.
On Friday, the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City, Marilyn Mosby, ruled that Gray’s death was a homicide, and filed charges against six Baltimore police officers involved in Gray’s arrest. Protests in Baltimore have been largely peaceful since Monday's riots as officials called in the Maryland National Guard and implemented a weeklong curfew.
