State Police in Lawrence, Massachusetts, stopped a man after he recorded police activity on a public sidewalk and then pulled the camera out of his hand when he refused to give it to them.

Jay Carattz said he was walking down the street when he spotted two plainclothes police officers seemingly detaining three people. He then took out his camera and began recording as he walked past the officers.

In the video, Carattz can be heard responding to someone with "How you doing?" Before an officer calls him back. One officer asks for the camera before reaching out and grabbing it. Meanwhile, an officer can be heard saying Carattz is "interfering with a police investigation." Carattz can be heard saying he is practicing his First Amendment rights.

Carattz said officers then cuffed him, roughed him up, and threatened to charge him with disorderly conduct. He also said police tried to delete the video he recorded.

After being released with no charges, Carattz said he went to the hospital to be treated for injuries to his wrists and lower back. He claims the handcuffs were locked so tight that his “wrists got very swollen.”

Carattz did not file a police report regarding the incident

“I did not file a police report because I really don’t have any confidence in the police department conducting an internal investigation,” Carattz said.
