The US Capitol commissioned police to investigate a possible bomb threat after a person committed suicide next to the US Capitol building in Washington DC on Saturday, a spokesman for Washington DC Police told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Capitol police have surrounded the scene and are continuing with their investigation.

Police are looking into the "suspicious package," DC Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Sean Convoy told Sputnik.

"The person deceased," Lt. Sean Convoy confirmed.

Though the ambulance has already left, everything is still blocked off, Convoy said Saturday.

One of the witnesses of the incident, DC resident Robert Bishop, was biking around the Capitol at noon when he heard what sounded like a balloon popping.

"A gentleman came up and shot himself," Bishop told Sputnik.

"He was 25 feet behind me, I thought it was a ballon popping, but he shot himself and had a suitcase," Bishop stated.

Earlier on Saturday, US media reported citing the Capitol police that several shots have been fired on the west front of the Capitol building and that the gunman has been "neutralized." The shooting was later confirmed to be a suicide attempt.
