White House Avoids Naming Entity Responsible for Network’s Hack

The entity responsible for the November 2014 breach of the White House computer system will not be named at present, despite media reports that Russian hackers launched the cyberattack, White House spokesperson Josh Earnest said.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Tuesday night, CNN cited a source claiming Russia had hacked computers at the White House, saying that the culprits “worked for the Russian government.”

"I think what is prompting the news is that there are sources attributing this attack to one specific country and I'm just not in a position to do that,” Earnest said in Wednesday’s press briefing.

Russian hackers allegedly breached a White House computer system and retrieved personal information such as US President Barack Obama’s schedule, according to the report.

Earnest added that investigators looking into the White House cyberattack concluded that “it is not in our [US] best interests to identify the entity that may be responsible for this specific activity of concern."

Earnest noted most of the White House’s network capabilities that were compromised have been restored.

Washington has repeatedly accused Moscow of cyberattacks but provided no evidence for these claims. In February, US Director of National Intelligence James Clapper named Russia, China, Iran and North Korea as the leading cyberthreats to the United States.

On Tuesday, Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Washington’s constant allegations blaming Russia for numerous cyberattacks, has become the new sport of the West.
