Memories Pizza made headlines Tuesday after they publicly declared that they would refuse to cater same sex weddings.
"If a gay couple was to come in and, say, they wanted us to provide them pizzas for a wedding, we would have to say no," the owner of the establishment told WBND news.
The following day, which happened to be April Fool’s Day, a parody website was created at memoriespizza.com declaring the establishment the “home of the dick pizza,” offering toppings such as “Sausage (The big thick kind),” and urging customers to “call us to cater your gay wedding!”
Their Yelp page was also flooded with negative reviews, memes, and messages for the owners to spread love and not hate.
Amid the scandal, the owners of the restaurant closed it down indefinitely, stating that they were going into hiding after receiving threats against their lives.
Supporters rallied on Wednesday, and a man named Lawrence Jones, a contributor for conservative radio show “The Dana Show,” created a GoFundMe stating that he aimed “to relieve the financial loss endured by the proprietors' stand for faith."
Within the first 24 hours the online fundraiser had brought in nearly a quarter of a million dollars, and 2 days later the donations closed with a whopping $842,387 dollars raised for the anti-gay family.
Meanwhile, the memoriespizza.com parody site now redirects to the It Gets Better Project, an international organization that strives to “show young LGBT people the levels of happiness, potential, and positivity their lives will reach – if they can just get through their teen years. The It Gets Better Project wants to remind teenagers in the LGBT community that they are not alone — and it WILL get better.”
