Petition Gains Support to Put Woman on $20 Bill in United States

A campaign to replace the face on the $20 bill with a face of a woman by the year 2020 is gaining speed, Woman on 20s Director Susan Ades Stone told Sputnik.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) — Stone explained that the group has already received over 150,000 votes nationwide, already surpassing the 100,000 needed to petition The White House.

“We’ve had great success so far,” Stone said on Wednesday about the campaign that is promoted through social media since January.

Supporters of the Women on 20s movement are encouraged to vote online for the woman that should be placed on the $20 bill, to replace the seventh President of the United States, Andrew Jackson.

Apart from the $20 bill being one of the most common denominations in every-day trade, Stone said Jackson’s removal is fitting because of his mistreatment of Native Americans and his overall hatred of paper currency.

“Andrew Jackson was not a fan of paper money, he did not believe in the central bank system, and he would probably be appalled to find that he is on paper money and a bill that we use so often,” Stone noted.

Stone added she is confident that enough support will be generated to have a new $20 bill by 2020, the 100th anniversary of the Constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote.

Several women that are currently on the list of candidates to replace President Jackson include women’s rights advocate and abolitionist Susan B. Anthony, former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt and civil rights advocate Rosa Parks.
