WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Texas State University leadership believes Texas college governing boards should determine whether to allow individuals carrying concealed guns onto campuses, Texas State University Communications Director Mike Wintemute told Sputnik.
“Our Chancellor [Brain McCall] has spoken on this in several legislative committees, and expressed his preference that matters like this be decided by individual governing boards of universities and university systems in Texas,” Wintemute said on Thursday.
Texas State University is just one of the six university systems in Texas, in addition to independent governing boards present in other Texas public universities, Wintemute said.
On Wednesday, the Texas conceal-to-carry college law, also known as Senate Bill 17, was given preliminary approval by the Texas Senate after being passed on Monday.
The bill is set to be signed into law by Texas Governor Greg Abbott after one final trip through the Texas House for any possible amendments.
Wintemute noted that there is a lengthy process ahead in the Texas legislature as the Texas House of Representatives will create the final version of the bill.
