Gonzalez, who served in Iraq, is charged with unlawfully entering a restricted building or grounds while carrying a weapon and assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers or employees, according to the US Attorney's Office for Washington, DC.
His ex-wife says Gonzalez suffered a "terrible" trauma during his tour of duty and needs treatment rather than prison, NBC News reported.
In addition to prison time, Gonzalez will have to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Officers found a machete and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in his car following the security breach, a review of which by the Secret Service revealed multiple failures in their protocol and in part led to the resignation of Secret Service Director Julia Pierson, according to NBC News.
