A homeless man set himself on fire on a city street close to where hundreds of revelers were hopping bar to bar for an annual St. Patrick's pub crawl, AP reports from Hoboken, New Jersey.

Police arrived at the scene minutes after receiving a call Saturday evening about a man trying to set himself ablaze.

Officers told the man to get down so they could put out the flames, but he refused.

As the fire spread, the man started screaming and officers were able to push him to the ground to put out the blaze.

An annual St. Patrick's Day bar crawl had started at 11 a.m., drawing hundreds to over 20 bars in the neighborhood.
