Chicago Police Department claims that the undocumented police site Homan Square used for interrogating suspected criminals in Chicago that critics have alleged is not allowing the suspects access to family or lawyers, abides by all regulations.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The undocumented police site Homan Square used for interrogating suspected criminals in Chicago that critics have alleged is not allowing the suspects access to family or lawyers, abides by all regulations, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) told Sputnik on Wednesday.

“CPD abides by all laws, rules, and guidelines pertaining to any interviews of suspects or witnesses, at Homan Square or any other CPD facility,” the department said.

The department also said that if lawyers represent a client who is at Homan Square, they are allowed to visit and speak with that client.

Homan Square — home to CPD’s Evidence Recovered Property Section where the public is able to claim inventoried property — is sensitive because many police officers who operate there are in undercover assignments; advertising their location would put the officers’ lives at risk, the CPD added.

Homan Square is also home to the Bureau of Organized Crime, Special Weapons Assistance Teams (SWAT) Unit Evidence Technicians, and CPD ballistics lab. Records of anyone arrested are always kept on such sites, and Homan Square is no different from the others, the department concluded.

The Guardian publication reported on the existence of Homan Square on Tuesday.
